Son of Albert James Oakes and Laura Oakes nee Tanner of Sandringham Road, Norwich, Norfolk, England.
Prior to coming to Australia Albert served with the Norfolk Regular Territorial Forces for four years.
Granted leave from 14 May 1919 to 30 September 1919 to Clothing Trade course with Chamberlain, LTD. of Botolph Street, Norwich, England.
Commenced return to Australia on 1 November 1919 aboard HT Nestor disembarking on 15 December 1919
