Met his future wife, Doris Willmott, on a visit to Redhill, Surrey when on leave with an army friend Eric Granville Mercy, who was related to the family.

After WW1 he trained to be a doctor joining his father Dr John Henry Bennett, formerly of St Arnaud, in his practice in Hepburn Street, Auburn.

He had 3 sons, 2 of whom also became doctors.

Died at Heidelberg, aged 62 and Cremated at Templestowe Cemetery & Memorial Gardens, Victoria: Some ashes scattered by son Bob, but also interred in grave on Mundy Lawn
