24 Mar 1917: Honoured Distinguished Conduct Medal, Beaumetz, morning, during an attack on the village, when the enemy had broken our line and taken possession of a building from which we were being badly enfiladed, Sgt Shearer assisted with great initiative in organising and leading a bombing party which successfully regained possession. After the attack had been repulsed, Sgt Shearer went out under severe snipers’ fire and brought in a wounded man of his section. His conduct and Initiative during the whole attack set a fine example to the men under him and is worthy of distinction.
