Edward was the only son of the late Mr. E.O. Saunders of Parramatta, and was born at Singleton in 1892 and educated at the Parramatta South and Crown Street Public Schools. He joined the process engraving department of the Sydney Morning Herald at the end of 1914.
In September 1915, he enlisted as a Private in the Army Service Corps, and after a stay of five months in Egypt proceeded to France. He went through the Somme coampaign, and was in most of the principal engagements in which the Australians participated until July 1918, when he was stricken with illness, with a long spell in hospital following.
He returned home to Australia in September 1919.
