Died on this date – 8th September…… Esmond Thomas Green was born at Gobur, near Euroa, Victoria in 1893.

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force (A.I.F.) on 21st November, 1914 as a 21 year old, single, Butcher.

Esmond Thomas Green married Eileen Veronica Cameron in 1915 in Victoria.

On 17th April, 1915 Gunner Esmond Thomas Green, Service number 4211, embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on HMAT Hororata (A20) with the 2nd Field Artillery Brigade, 5th Reinforcements.

He joined M.E.F. (Mediterranean Expeditionary Force) on 26th May, 1915. He was transferred to 2nd B.A.C. (Brigade Ammunition Column) at Anzac on 23rd July, 1915.

Gunner Green was admitted to 3rd Light Horse Field Ambulance at Mudros on 26th July, 1915 with Shock. He was transferred to 1st Southern Hospital at Lemnos on 3rd August, 1915 with Diarrhoea.

On 26th August, 1915 Gunner Green was admitted to Hospital Ship Assaye at Gallipoli with G.S.W. (gunshot wound/s) to Arm. He was admitted to No. 2 General Hospital at Ghezirah on 30th August, 1915. Gunner Green was transferred to Mena House at Cairo on 7th September, 1915. He was transferred to Convalescent Hospital at Helouan on 11th October, 1915. Gunner Green joined Details at New Oasis Camp at Cairo on 23rd November, 1915.

He was transferred to 4th Divisional Artillery at Tel-el-Kebir on 27th February, 1916. He was taken on strength of 21st Howitzer Brigade & posted to 102nd Battery on 6th March, 1916 at Tel-el-Kebir.

Gunner Green proceeded to join B.E.F. (British Expeditionary Force) from Alexandria on 25th March, 1916 & disembarked at Marseilles, France on 1st April, 1916.

He was taken on strength of 2 F.A.B. (Field Artillery Brigade) on 15th May, 1916 as Driver, having been transferred from 21st Howitzer Brigade.

Driver Esmond Thomas Green was with his Unit on 15th January, 1917 (this was reported when no activity had been recorded on his Casualty Form – Active Service for several months).

On 2nd August, 1917 Driver Green was promoted to Acting Bombardier vice Tope promoted.

Acting Bombardier Esmond Thomas Green was promoted to Temporary Bombardier on 19th October, 1917 vice Holden promoted. He was promoted to Bombardier on the same day to complete Establishment.

He was on Leave to England from 28th November, 1917 & rejoined his Unit from Leave on 18th December, 1917.

On 24th March, 1918 Bombardier Green reported sick. He was admitted to 2nd Australian Field Ambulance on 25th March, 1918 with Laryngitis. Bombardier Green was discharged to duty on 28th March, 1918 & rejoined 2nd F.A.B. on 29th March, 1918.

Bombardier Esmond Thomas Green was wounded in action in France on 23rd August, 1918. He was admitted to 3rd Australian Field Ambulance on 23rd August, 1918 with shrapnel wounds to ear & neck then transferred to Casualty Clearing Station. Bombardier Green was admitted to 9th (USA) General Hospital at Rouen, France on 24th August, 1918. He was invalided to England on 26th August, 1918 on Hospital Ship Gloucester Castle.

He was admitted to 2/1 Southern General Hospital at Birmingham, England on 27th August, 1918 with shrapnel wound/s to Head.

Bombardier Esmond Thomas Green died at 6.40 am on 8th September, 1918 at 2/1 Southern General Hospital, Dudley Road, Birmingham, England from wounds received in action - 1. G.S.W. (gunshot wound/s) to left Ear & right Neck  2. Septic Meningitis.

He was buried in Lodge Hill Cemetery, Birmingham, West Midlands, England where 54 other WW1 Australian War Graves are located. Most of the soldiers in the war graves plot in Section B10 do not have headstones. The names of those buried in the plot, or in graves elsewhere in the cemetery which could not be individually marked, are inscribed on a Screen Wall.
