William Mair served in both the South African (Boer) War and WW1. First service was as a Private S.N. 255 in the 5th Queensland Imperial Bushmen, Boer War. Second service was as a Private S.N. 1719 in the 31st Infantry Battalion AIF, WW1.

When William Mair enlisted in 1901 in the 5th QIB and his details were published with the rank and file in The Queenslander, 16 Mar 1901, he noted his N.O.K. as his father C. Mair, Normanby Hill, Brisbane. When he enlisted for WW1 he noted on his Attestation Paper dated 20 Jul 1915 that; he was born at Glasgow, Scotland, and was 39 years 1 month old; he was married and his N.O.K. was his wife Mrs. E. R. Mair living at Rosalie; he worked as an insurance agent; and he had previously served in the 5th QIB.

William Mair was born in 1876 at Bridgeton, Glasgow in Scotland, a son to Charles Mair and Isabella Shaw Mair (nee Harper). He married Emily Rosa Johnson on 16 Dec 1911 in Queensland and they had 3 children.
