Father William Birchall, Otago, New Zealand.

On enlisting he was 34yrs 8mths old; 5' 7" tall; 9 stone; dark complexion; black hair; single. a bricklayer, lived c/o Mrs Coleman, Wynnum Sth, Bris, QLD - CoE. 

Previous service - 3yrs Dunedin Engineers.

22/10/1915    Enlisted in Brisbane, QLD
20/11/1915    Embarked from Sydney, onboard HMAT Te Anau
                     as a Private in 4th Infantry Battalion, Naval & Military Forces
                      - Special Tropical Corps for Rabaul

6/5/1916        detailed for duty in the Telephone Exchange
9/1/1917        Corporal
12/2/1917      proceeded to Aust per SS Morinda - for leave
4/6/1918        Embarked at Brisbane, on SS Marsina to Rabaul
3/3/1919        Appointed Police Master at Wanimo
9/7/1919        transfer from Native Police to Pioneers
10/9/1919      Embarked Rabaul onboard SS Melusia for leave and discharge
1/12/1919      discharged
