Ernest joined the 27th Battalion, 6th Reinforcement and with his unit embarked from Adelaide on board HMAT A 24 Benalla on 27 October 1915. In the Middle East he was hospitalised with diphtheria at Abbassia, Egypt on 27 January 1916. Ernest was admitted to Queen Mary’s Military Hospital, Lancashire, England on 25 September, seriously ill with perecarditis and in December he was hospitalised with myalgia at the 3rd Auxiliary Hospital. He proceeded to France on 28 June 1917. Rheumatism resulted in another period of hospitalisation for Ernest at the 83rd General Hospital, Boulogne in January 1918.
Private Ernest Ross returned to Australia on board the Suffolk on 12 April 1919 and was discharged on 25 July.
