Walter Stephen Filmer, killed on the 3rd of May, 1917, was born in 1893. He was appointed junior teacher at School 295, Hamilton, in 1910, and head teacher at No. 3525, Womerah, in 1914. He earned the reputation of an energetic, progressive teacher.
While at Hamilton, he took a great interest in military matters, and was O.C. of H Company, 7Ist Infantry.
He sailed for Egypt in March, 1916, spent one month there and three in England, then went to France in September. He won his commission on the battlefield ere he fell in action.
His mother, Mrs. Rose E. Filmer, lives at Byaduk, in the Western District.
