Biography contributed by Chris Buckley

Corporal Charles William Ward (Service No:69209) enlisted in the RAAF on 21 August 1942 as an Aircraftman I. Mustered as a Service Policeman, he was Discharged on 7 July 1944 to 'resume civil occupation' as a Merchant Seaman.

Born in 1918 in London, according to BDM Vic (21303/72), Charles (Scotty) was the son of William Ward and Alice Johnson. In his Attestation Papers (National Archives Australia), Scotty was an  unemployed Seaman living in Bondi, Sydney NSW in 1942 when he enlisted in the RAAF. He had attended Napier Rd Secondary School in East Ham London (1926 to 1933) and had first worked in London as a Sewing Machine Mechanic before enlisting in the Merchant Navy as a Seaman - taking part in the evacuation from Dunkirk and transporting munitions to Malta. He then served as Able Seaman and Bosun on ships (Malaita, Iron Prince and Period) along the east coast of Australia, trading to Darwin and Port Moresby.

In 1942 Scotty married Iris Eva Shout (b1916 in Dandenong, Victoria) - Iris was a Private (Service No:V388130) in the AWAS. Scotty and Iris settled in Carrum before relocating to Frankston. Scotty died in 1972 and Iris in 2009.
