Leading Aircraftman William Campbell Lightbody (Service No:117808) initially served in the ACMF (Private; Service No:V351419) with 8th Battalion VDC from 28 March 1942 to 24 August 1942. He enlisted in the RAAF as an Aircraftman I at No 1 Recruiting centre RAAF Melbourne on 27 August 1942 - mustered as a General Hand. ACI Lighbody was attached to 1 Embarkation Depot and No 5 Service Training School (STT) in 1942, and in February 1943 was promoted to Leading Aircraftman, attached to No 5 Embarkation Depot. With manpower shortages in the dairy industry (LAC Lighbody was freehold owner of a 200 acre dairy farm) he was Discharged on 21 July 1944 'to resume civilian occupation' (NAA).

Born at Cape Bridgewater via Portland, Victoria in 1900, Jock was fifth of six children of William John Lightbody (b1853 in Warrnambool, Victoria) and Ann (Annie) Cameron Campbell (b1863 at Staffordshire Reef, Victoria). William (a Farmer) and Annie married in Mt Richmond in 1884 and settled at Cape Bridgewater via Portland where they raised their family and William was a Farmer.

Jock worked at Bridgewater via Portland as a Farm Labourer and Farmer and in 1929 in Portland married Olive (Ettie) Esther Westlake (b1902 in Beulah, Victoria). Jock and Ettie settled in North Portland where they raised their family and Jock was a Dairy Farmer. Jock was involved in volunteer firefighting in the region and the Dairy Farmers' Association. Jock died in 1974 and Ettie in 1988.
