Son of James Upton and Elizabeth Agnes Upton nee Wolffe/Woulffe of Yering, Victoria.
29 March 1915 - enlisted at Melbourne, Victoria, with the 23rd Battlaion with the rank of Private
1 March 1916 - transferred to the 6th Machine Gun Company
10 November 1916 - wounded in action. Transferred to England aboard HS Carisbrook Castle with wound to the right leg, later amputated below the knee.
16 December 1917- commenced return to Australia aboard HT Kanowna disembarking on 3 February 1918
Medals: 1914-1915 Star, British War Medal, Victory Medal
23 March 1918 - discharged at the 3rd Military District as medically unfit due to amputation.
During 1925c Michael married Eva Florence Miners in Victoria
