Ernest trained at Mitcham with the 2nd Depot Battalion and then was attached to 11 / 32nd Infantry Battalion on 16 October 1916. The unit embarked HMAT A19 Afric from Adelaide on 7 November, disembarking at Plymouth, England on 9 January 1917. During the journey, Ernest was hospitalised with bronchitis. The 32nd were sent from Folkestone to France on 5 April. Ernest served with the 8th Training Battalion at Hurdcott. Another bout of bronchitis on 7 May led to a month in hospital at Camiers, France before he rejoined his unit on 10 June.
While in action with the 32nd at Villers Bretonneux on 29 April 1918, Ernest suffered severe burns to his back and cheek during a gas shell attack, necessitating being invalided and admitted to Reading War Hospital in England on 12 May. On 3 June he was sent to the 3rd Auxiliary Hospital at Dartford, then to Brigade Hospital, Hurdcott, where he was treated for the gas wound and an ulcered foot and toe.
Ernest was appointed temporary Corporal on 1 May 1919. He returned to Australia on Konigin Luise on 2 February 1920 and was discharged on 19 March.
Ernest was awarded the 1914/15 Star, British War Medal and the Victory Medal.
Ernest Hooper died at Fullarton, Adelaide on 24 December,1951. The following death notice appeared in The Advertiser 26 December 1951: “The friends of the late Mr. Ernest Gilbert Hooper are respectfully informed that his funeral will leave his late residence, “Lark Hill”, Kersbrook, today (Wednesday) at 3pm for the Kersbrook Cemetery.”
