"RICE, John Emanuel. Private (Signaller), No. 4799, 25th Battalion. Born at Gympie, and educated at Gympie and Mt. Morgan. Son of John and Elizabeth Rice, of Shandon Hill, off William St., Mt. Morgan. Prior to enlisting he was a mercer at Bukoski and Coy., Mt. Morgan. Enlisted at Mt. Morgan December, 1915, and went into Enoggera Camp, where he was attached to the 25th Batt. Sailed April 1916, for England, and arrived in July. He went to the Signalling School, left for France December, 1916, and went into action at Armentieres. On 3rd May, 1917. was wounded, left arm being blown off. He was sent to hospital at Birmingham (Eng.), and then to Australia, and arrived March, 1918, and discharged." - From Queenslanders Who Fought in the Great War
