Leading Aircraftman Stanley Charles Witney (Service No:53960) initially served in the Militia (Private; Service No:V56786) with Melbourne University Rifles from 16 August 1940 to 25 March 1942. He enlisted in the RAAF at No 1 Recruiting Centre Melbourne on 14 April 1942 as an Aircraftman I - mustered as a Flight Mechanic. During 1942 ACI Witney was attached to No 4 School of Technical Training (STT) Adelaide, No 1 Engineering School (ES) Ascot Vale, and No 11 Elementary Flying Training School (EFTS) Benalla. Promoted to LAC in 1943 - remustered as Fitter - he was attached to 1 Wireless Air Gunners School (WAGS) Ballarat and in 1944 to No 7 Service Flying Training School (SFTS) Deniliquin. LAC Witney was attached to 7 SFTS at Discharge on 30 October 1946. He was one of five siblings who served in WWII.

Jim was born in Dimboola, Victoria in 1916, ninth of ten children of Walter William Witney (b1870 in Dimboola, Victoria) and Emilie (Millie) Pauline Miller (b1879 in Dimboola, Victoria). Walter (a Farmer) and Millie married in 1901 in Dimboola and lived there and in Jeparit and Warracknabeal where they raised their family and Walter was a Farmer.

Jim worked as a Clerk in Warracknabeal whilst he was waiting to join the Education Department as a Primary School Teacher. Prior to enlistment, he taught at Willenabrina and Brim and, following his Discharge, was in Bendigo in 1947 when he married Rita Louisa Gallaugher (b1919 at Diggers Rest, Victoria). Jim and Rita lived in Bendigo, Beech Forest and Melbourne where they raised their family and Jim was a Teacher. In the 1970s they settled in Frankston, where Jim died in 2003. Rita died in 2009.
