Leading Aircraftman Alexander Rutherford Dickson (Service No:142402) initially served in the ACMF as a Private (Service No:V17244) from 8 July 1941 to 28 October 1942 (Discharged for Illegal Absence and False Attestation - underage at 17 years and six months when he enlisted). Family anecdote is that 'Dad (Robert Angus Dickson) and Nuggie got drunk one night and Nuggie urged Dad to enlist' (Jessica Dickson; 2012). Aircraftman I Dickson enlisted in the RAAF on 4 June 1943 at 1 Recruiting Centre Melbourne - mustered as Guard and later as Cook's Assistant. LAC Dickson served at 54 Mile, Northern Territory with Security Guards Unit (SGU) and at Jacquinot Bay, Morotai and Balikapan with 18 RSU (21 April 1945 - 15 October 1945). LAC Dickson was attached to No 2 Squadron at Discharge on 30 January 1946. Sibling Bob served in the Army in WWII.
Nuggie was born in Maffra, Victoria in 1925, second of five children of Alexander (Alex) Dickson (b1886 in Lauder, Scotland) and Jessie May Wishart (b1897 in Bega, NSW). Alex was a Mill Hand when he immigrated in 1909, arriving in Melbourne on board the Marathon, and settling in Maffra where he was a Labourer. Alex served in the AIF in WWI (Private; Service No:3808) and, following his Discharge, returned to Maffra. He was working in Maffra as a Driver in 1923 when he and Jessie married. The couple settled in Maffra, where they raised their family and Alex worked as a Driver and Carter.
Nuggie worked in the Brick Kilns in Maffra as a Labourer, and in 1943 in Sale married Ethel Margeurite Archer (b1928 in Orbost, Victoria). Following his Discharge, Nuggie and Ethel lived in Maffra and Sale, where they raised their family and Nuggie was a Labourer. Nuggie died in 1991 and Ethel in 2015.
