Jason Scott Schubert was born in Renmark on the 1st of October, 1969. Jason is the youngest of three children to Barrie and Lorraine Schubert. With High School completed, Jason’s sister persuaded him to enter the ADF.
Jason enlisted in the Australian Regular Army on the 29th of November, 1988. After completing recruit training at Kapooka, Jason was allocated to the Royal Australian Armoured Corps (RAAC). Jason finished his initial employment training at the School of Armour in Victoria, and was posted to B Squadron, 3/4 Cavalry Regiment located in Townsville NQ at Lavarack Barracks. The role of B Squadron was to support the two Infantry Battalions.
In January 1993, B Sqn 3/4 Cav Regt deployed to Somalia on OP Solace as part of the 1st Battalion Royal Australian Regiment (1RAR Gp) Group. The 1RAR Gp arrived in a country that was in chaos, decimated, and ruined by civil war and genocide. In Somalia, killings, rape and pillage were the daily routine. In these circumstances individual citizens who were not part of organised factions, either armed themselves or risked dying a slow death of starvation.
