From Ballarat & District in the Great War
Wonderful news from Fromelles - the remains of Sgt Athol Halliday McDowell, 3194 60th Battalion, who was killed in action 19 July 1916, have been formally identified. Athol grew up in Gordon, where his father was the local police constable. He was educated at the Gordon State School, and also spent time in Ballarat. His youngest brother, Norman Kenneth, who was a stretcher-bearer with the 14th Field Ambulance, died of wounds on 21 September 1917.
Continued thanks to Lambis Englezos, whose belief in the project and dogged determination brought so many of these boys home.
