Joseph was born in Brisbane, Queensland, on 27th December, 1894, the son of Mr. George Beattie and Mrs. Margaret Beattie. He was educated at the Southport High School, and the Auckland Grammar School, New Zealand.
He entered the service of" the Bank at Auckland, New Zealand, on 20th December, 1911.
Joseph Nesbitt Beattie enlisted on 6th August, 1914, as a member of the Expeditionary Force which captured German Samoa. He was afterwards in the 1st Battalion of the New Zealand Rifle Brigade, and was promoted to sergeant, being in action in Tripoli against the Senussi, and in F ranee until 1917.
For his services he was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal, and was promoted to lieutenant.
