Cyril Albert Harry RIDER was born on 28th September 1894 at Randwick in Sydney. His parents were Cyril Albert Rider (Railway Employee) and Alice Marion Rider (née Christie). On 15thMarch 1912 he joined the NSW Government Railways and Tramways as a cleaner in the Electric Tramways based at Dowling St depot in Sydney. On 11th July 1912 he was transferred to the Tramways’ Signal Experts Branch and two days later, on 13th July 1912, he was assigned as a shop boy to the Tramways Interlocking Branch based at Sydney. On 21st September 1912 he resigned from the NSWGR&T, but on 3rd November 1916 he re-joined as a porter in the Sydney District of the Railways’ Traffic Branch.

He joined the AIF on 28th November 1917 with the rank of Private (Service Number 84159). When he enlisted, he was married with one child, a son named Cyril Albert Rider who was three months old. The family was living at South Granville in Sydney. He nominated his wife, Violet Winifred Rider (née Gorick), as his next of kin. He was assigned to the Railway Unit,and was based at the Showground Camp in Sydney.

On 20thDecember 1917 he died in the Garrison Hospital at Victoria Barracks in Sydney due to the effects of double pneumonia toxaemia following an appendectomy. His grave is in Rookwood Necropolis, Rookwood, Sydney, NSW, and his place of association is Fairfield, Sydney, NSW.

After his death his widow was granted a pension of £2 per fortnight and his infant son was granted a pension of £1 per fortnight, both with effect from 21st February 1918.
