Michael Dennis McGree gave his occupation as a fell manager and was involved in the timber industry when he enlisted in New Zealand on the 15th February 1915. He was the son of James and Bridget McGree, of Taylors Arm, Macksville, Nambucca River, New South Wales.
He was posted to the Otago Regiment and left New Zealand during June 1915. He served at Gallipoli for several months before he was sent to France. He was wounded at Armentieres on 11th July 1916 and evacuated to England. When he recovered, he was sent back to France. He was killed in action near Gommecourt Wood, France, 18th July 1918.
His brother also enlisted in New Zealand, 10/1586 Private Patrick Joseph Mcgree, Wellington Rifles, NZEF, was reported missing during the heavy fighting at Chunuk Bair Ridge on the 8th August 1915, later confirmed as killed in action.
A third brother died with the Australian forces, 3888 Private John Ambrose McGree, 1st Battalion AIF, died of wounds on the 26 July 1916, during the heavy fighting at Pozieres.
