Patrick Joseph McGree, the son of James and Bridget McGree, of Taylor's Arm, Macksville, Nambucca River, enlisted in New Zealand shortly before Christmas 1914. He embarked from New Zealand during February 1915 as a member of the Wellington Rifles. Private Patrick Joseph Mcgree was reported missing during the heavy fighting at Chunuk Bair Ridge on the 8 August 1915.
His brother 3888 Private John Ambrose McGree died of wounds on the 26th July 1916 and was a buried by a British chaplain in the Warloy-Baillon Communal Cemetery Extension.
A third brother Michael Dennis McGree also enlisted in New Zealand on the 15th February 1915. He was posted to the Otago Regiment and left New Zealand during June 1915. He served at Gallipoli for several months before he was sent to France. He was wounded at Armentieres on 11 July 1916 and evacuated to England. When he recovered, he was sent back to France. 8/2076 Private Michael Dennis McGree Otago Regiment NZEF was killed in action near Gommecourt Wood, France, 18 July 1918.
