Son of Samuel Arthur and Ruby Isobel MacIvor, of Largs Bay. Educated at Largs Bay and LeFevre Peninsula Public School he was interested in yachting and motor cycling, and was very musical. In civilian life he was a butcher living at Wayville and joined the Militia in August 1939 but was killed in an accident on the Mount Barker Road whilst on duty on 12th November 1940. His brother Colin served in the RAAF.
When an Army Service Corps motor lorry crashed into a gully from the Mount Barker road, a little below the Eagle on the Hill, while returning to the depot at Keswick from Woodside late last night, the driver, John Hinton of Jetty Road, Glenelg, suffered shock and his companion John Norman MacIvor, 22, of Largs Bay, received fatal injuries. Both men who were Militia trainees, were taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital, but MacIvor was dead on arrival. Hinton was treated and allowed to leave.
