William James Henry was born on 28 April 1885 in Cambewarra, New South Wales, Australia, the son of John and Agnes (Kremer) Henry. He was the oldest brother of twelve children.

He had never married, and was permanently living in Perth, Western Australia, Australia when he enlisted on 30 October 1916.
