Served with 2nd Battalion Auckland Infantry Regiment

He became seriously ill on 24.1.1917, was sent to England for treatment and did not return to his unit. He was diagnosed with Tuberculosis of the lung and he was embarked as an invalid for New Zealand on 23.7.1917. He was discharged - unfit for service - on 25.12.1917.
