Biography contributed

John Hartnett was the eldest and one of seven Tasmanian born brothers who enlisted during WW1. Six of the brothers moved to the South Island of NZ sometime before 1910 to work as bushman and shearers. Four of the brothers lost their lives with the New Zealand armed forces. They were, 24/2216 Rifleman Denny Hartnett, New Zealand Rifle Brigade, killed in action 5 October 1916, 8/3618 Lance Corporal Cyril Hartnett Otago Regiment NZEF, killed in action 12 October 1917 and 8/2610 Lance Corporal Philip John Hartnett Canterbury Regiment NZEF died accidently, 17 March 1919, lost overboard ship on the transport Ajana.

Three other brothers also served 82006 Rifleman Tim Hartnett NZRB, 49817 Private William Hartnett Canterbury Regiment NZEF and 84181 Private Percy Joseph Hartnett.
