59 years ago today, on the 29th July 1964, Private Joseph Palmer, 2nd Australian Motor Transport Company (Reg No-14011), clerk from 35 Perkins Street, Newcastle, N.S.W. and Kempster Street (Road), Merewether, N.S.W. and 1/11 Blenheim Street, Randwick, N.S.W., father of four (baby Palmer, still born, 4.4.1934, no death or funeral notice, Marjorie, Vida, Ivan Joseph), was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 71. ANGLICAN 1-63. 20.

Born at Lambton, New South Wales on the 18th January 1893 to Joseph and Susan Palmer; husband of Essie Madeleine Palmer nee Carr (married 1923, Merewether, N.S.W., died 9.7.1935, Merewether, N.S.W., age 34, sleeping here), Joe enlisted on the 18th October 1916 at Sydney, N.S.W.

Embarked from Melbourne, Victoria on board HMAT A9 Shropshire on the 11th May 1917.
Granted leave to France and England from the 22.2.1919 to the 16.3.1919.

Admitted to hospital 1.4.1919 (defective hearing), 13.4.1919 (nasopharyngitis - cough, headache, fever, and body aches), 16.4.1919 (defective hearing).

Joe returned home on the 10th August 1919, being discharged on the 29th October 1919.

Mr. Palmer’s name has been inscribed on the Newcastle Surf Club & Life-Saving Brigade Honor Roll.

I have placed poppies and a 1914-1918 WAR label at Joe’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
