Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

66 years ago today, on the 13th December 1957, Private Charles Brown (Browne), 2nd Battalion (Reg No-2131A), navvy from Elgin Street, West Maitland, New South Wales and 8 Church Street, Lambton, N.S.W. (1940) and Wallsend, N.S.W.?, was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 68. CATHOLIC 2-74. 14.

Born at Aberdeen, Scotland about the 12th July 1889 or 1891 to Bella Brown or James and Beatrice?, death certificate states William and Mary Brown; husband of Emily Browne nee Bowcock (married as BROWNE 1920, Newcastle, N.S.W., died 14.5.1983, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 88, sleeping here), Charles enlisted on the 13th February 1917 with the 7th Australian Light Trench Mortar Battery at West Maitland, N.S.W.

Embarked HMAT A9 Shropshire, Melbourne, Victoria on the 11th May 1917.

Admitted to hospital 10.7.1918 (left knee bursitis - inflammation of a small fluid-filled sac (bursa) situated near your knee joint), 17.3.1919 (influenza, broncho pneumonia, dangerously ill).

Granted leave to England and France from 17.12.1918 to 31.12.1918.

Commenced return to Australia 31.5.1919.
Charles arrived home on the 12th July 1919, being discharged on the 13th August 1919.

Nothing located on Trove regarding enlistment, returning home, etc.

Mr. Brown’s name has been inscribed on The Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall. Name not inscribed on the West Maitland and District Roll of Honor.

I have placed poppies at Charles’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
