Daughter of James ROBERTS and Mary nee NICHOLS
Married 27 October 1897 George Wilson GOWLAND at Hobart, Tas.
GOWLAND. (nee: GERTIE ROBERTS). -- On March 30, 1914, at her residence, 143 Glenferrie-road, Glenferrie, Melbourne, Gertrude, the dearly loved wife of George W. Gowland, and loving mother of Max and Cora only daughter of the late James and Mary Roberts, of Hobart.
Family story about her war service indicated she was decorated for saving the life of a senior officer, having refused to take the advice of the doctor who was present, and if the legend is to be believed, locked the doctor away in order to prevent him cutting off the officer's leg.
