One of three graduate engineers from Sydney University, who with Edwin Octavius Hutchinson, also from Mosman, and William Edward Pike, embarked for England on 23 November 1915 on board HMAT Ceramic A40, after being accepted for commissions in the British Army.
He was appointed a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers on 15 January 1916. Following further training he was appointed in April 1916 to a Royal Engineers unit with the Mesopotamian Expeditionary Force.
He died of disease at Basrah on 27 July 1916.
