One of three graduate engineers from Sydney University who, with Reginald William Gelme and Edwin Octavius Hutchinson, embarked for England on 23 November 1915 on board HMAT Ceranuc A40, after being accepted for commissions in the British Army. 

He was appointed a Second Lieutenant in the Royal Engineers on 15 January 1916.
