Mr. K. R. Gabriel was the second son of Dr. and Mrs. J. E. Gabriel, of 492 Sandy Bay-road. He was born in 1916 and educated at Friends School, Hobart, where he was a prominent oars man, being a member of a crew which won the Head-of-the-River on two occasions. He was also a prominenst member of other school teams. He was apprenticed to the Blue Funnel Line before the outbreak of war and was serving in the Eumaeus as fourth officer when the vessel was torpedoed.
The captain of the steamer, who survived the attack, declared:-"He played his part nobly and well. He met his end at his station on the bridge. Throughout the action he never flinched and carried out his duties in an able manner."
Two brothers are with the A.I.F. overseas and the remaining brother is in the militia.
