War service: camp commandant, Liverpool, New South Wales, 1915. Enlisted in the AIF as Sea Transport Officer, Officer Commanding Troops for voyage only. Embarked from Australia per HMAT A70 'Ballarat' on 16 February 1916. Made several voyages to England on board 'Ajana' and 'Runic'.
COLONEL GEORGE KIRKLAND.
Colonel George Kerry Kirkland, V.D., who died at Millaa Millaa, North Queensland, last Thursday, was born in Derby, England, in 1859, and came to Sydney in 1882. He became Electrical Superintendent of the Public Works Department in New South Wales. He held that position until his retirement in 1928. Colonel Kirkland obtained a commission in the Seventh Volunteer Regiment, St. George's Rifles, in 1899, and subsequently commanded the regiment. He held the position of Camp Commandant at Liverpool in 1915, and was later appointed to the transport services. He went abroad as officer in charge of the troop-ships Ajana and Runic. He became associated with Freemasonry in New South Wales in 1887, and held various offices in Grand Lodge. He is survived by one son, Mr. R. C. Kirkland, of Sydney, and three daughters, Mrs. A. E. Butler and Mrs. R. G. Sherlock, of Sydney, and Mrs. S. Whereat, of Millaa Millaa, Queensland.
