Harold was the son of Gustav and Ellen Fisher. His younger brother Norman Edwin Fisher also enlisted in the 1st A.I.F. Upon completion of his basic training at Mitcham Camp in July 1916, Harold left Adelaíde per HMAT Anchises
A 68 on 28 August 1916. After undertaking further training at Penham Downs, England, his unit, the 10th Battalion,
20th Reinforcement, was sent to France per Golden Eagle from Folkestone on 17 December. it was on this day that Harold transferred to the 27th Battalion. Harold fought in France at the battles of Pozieres and Lagnicourt, and at the battles of Passchendaele and Celtic Wood in Belgium.
't Although it participated in minor attacks during the German withdrawl to the Hindenburg Line in early 1917, the
27th Battalion did not carry out a major attack again until 20 September 1917. On this occasion, it was part of the Division's first wave at the battle of Menin Road." 1. Harohd was k¶ed in action on that day at Ypres, Belgium and has no known grave. He is commemorated at the Menin Gate Memorial, Ypres, Belgium. Despite the fact that Harold's stated next of kin on his enlistment papers was his mother, Ellen, his Memorial scroll and Memorial plaque were sent to his father, Gustav. This was the accepted A.I.F. policy and common practice during World War One. Ellen was granted a pension of 20 shillings per fortnight as of 9 December.
