Served and suffered during The Great War, resting at Sandgate Cemetery.

62 years ago today, on the 20th December 1962, Gunner Francis Beattesta Fongo, referred to as Frank, 5th Australian Divisional Ammunition Column (Reg No-3045), labourer from Lower Boro, New South Wales and Morisset, N.S.W. (1935) and Newcastle, N.S.W., was laid to rest at Sandgate Cemetery, age 66. METHODIST 4-27. 07.

Born at Sydney, New South Wales about 1896 to Beattesta and Agnes Mary Fongo from 140 Reservoir Street, Surry Hills, N.S.W.; husband of Irene Myrtle Fongo nee Carling, married 30.11.1918, Sydney, N.S.W., died 25.11.1964, Newcastle, N.S.W., age 68, sleeping here, Frank enlisted on the 17th July 1915 with the 2nd Battalion (as Frank) at Liverpool, N.S.W.
Unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales on board HMAT A69 Warilda on the 8th October 1915.
Granted leave to England from 17.9.1917 to 28.9.1917.

Wounded in action - 2.10.1917 (shell shock).

Admitted to hospital 27.6.1917 (accidental scald to left foot), 20.1.1918 (neurasthenia or shell shock).

Invalided to England 27.1.1918.

Granted furlough from 5.3.1918 to 19.3.1918.

Commenced return to Australia 21.4.1918.
Frank arrived home on the 7th June 1918, being discharged medically unfit (neurasthenia) on the 10th July 1918.

Mr. Fongo’s name has been inscribed on the Capt. Clarence Smith Jeffries (V.C.) and Pte. William Matthew Currey (V.C.) Memorial Wall.

I have placed poppies at Frank’s gravesite in remembrance of his service and sacrifice for God, King & Country.
