Son of William ALDRIDGE, Temora, NSW
Private Percival Charles Aldridge died at the Melbourne Hospital on the evening of the 24th November last from Diabetes. The father and mother were imformed of the death through the Commandant, 2nd Military District. The grandfather, William Aldridge arrived rom Sydney on the 25th November, when arrangements were made for the burial to take place in the Church of England portion of the Coburg General Cemetery. The funeral left the Melbourne Hospital at 3pm on the 26th of November, the cost of same being borne by the department.
Word was received by W. Aldridge, sen., of this town, on Wednesday last, that his grandson, Sergt. P. C. Aldridge. had died, in the Melbourne Hospital. The deceased who belonged to the light horse section of the, expeditionary forces, was camped at Broadmeadows, Vic, and while in camp took ill. The military authorities offered to send the body to Temora for interment free of cost, but it was subsequently decided to have his remains interred in Coburg Cemetery. Deceased, who was a fine type of the Australian mounted Soldier was a native of Temora, right up to within a day or two of his death had written stating how fit he felt and how he longed to be in action. He was given a military funeral. Deceased was only 24 years of age when he died and usually followed the occupation of a compositor.
Writing of the above, a recent, issue of the "Twofold Bay Magnet" says:—The sad news of the death in Melbourne of Mr Percy Aldridge, one of the Eden contingent that left here some months ago, came as a great blow to his sister, Nurse G. Becus, who had received a letter from her brother only a few days, previously slating that he was in good health, after having suffered suffered severly from a bad arm caused through vaccination.
Mr Aldridge was a sterling and upright young fellow and beloved by all who knew him. He came to Eden some months ago for the good of his health, which had been greatly benefitted during his stay here. Deceased was the youngest son of Mr William Aldridge, of Traralgon, Victoria, and was 25 years of age. He was a compositor by trade, having worked in several leading offices in Victoria.—[The late Mr Aldridge was for some time on the staff of this paper, and his many friends here will regret to learn of his demise at such an early and promising age.—Ed. T.]
