Solomon (John) Sherman was born in Melbourne, Victoria in 1911, second of four children of Erome (Joseph) John Sherman (b1882 in Kiev, Russia) and Sara Levin (b1888 in Kiev, Russia). Joseph (a Tailor) and Sara married in 1905 in Cape Town, South Africa and arrived in Sydney NSW in 1907 on board the Manuka. Joseph and Sara settled in Melbourne, where they raised their family and Joseph was a Tailor.

John, who started work in Melbourne as a Furrier, could speak Yiddish, German and Polish, and make himself understood in Russian (Nick Murphy; 2004). In the mid 1930s, John moved to Bondi, NSW with his sister Annie and brother Leon, where they were Furriers and Tailors. John joined Sydney's New Theatre as an Actor, and worked as a Radio Announcer and performer with Sydney's 2UW Theatre Radio. Following his Discharge from the RAAF, John worked in Sydney as a a Radio and Stage Manager with Sydney's  Minerva Theatre before leaving for London in 1948. Through the 1950s John worked in London, Hollywood and Australia as an Actor (Radio and Television) and Scriptwiter. In 1955 in London, he married Irene Rankin, and they came to Melbourne, Victoria in 1958. John and Irene lived in Melbourne, where John was an Actor and Scriptwriter (and Irene was a Bookkeeper) until hs death in 1966.
