Ashby served during the First World War with the British Royal Field Artillery and he was Mentioned in Dispatches in 1917 and awarded a Military Cross (MC) while serving in Italy.

Military Cross (MC) notified in the London Gazette 3rd June 1918 Page 6496.

Captain. A. A. W. HOOPER, M.C.— Mr. A. F. Hooper, of Goldsbrough Mort and Co. has received advice by cable that his son, Ashby A. W. Hooper, has been promoted to the rank of captain in the Royal Field Artillery. Captain Hooper has been serving in France since June, 1915, and was last month awarded the Military 
Cross.
