Biography contributed by Faithe Jones

Husband of Elizabeth Mitchell, Napier Street, Cottesloe, Western Australia

The funeral of the late Mr. Ernest Joseph Mitchell, formerly of the 48th Battalion, A.I.F., and of 155 Glynde Street, East Fremantle, took place on Monday, the 28th inst., and was well attended.  The deceased who was 45 years of age, was born in Kadina, South Australia, where he resided for 17 years.  Twenty-eight years ago he came to this State to reside, making East Fremantle his home.  A widow survives him.  Mr. Mitchell saw active service abroad with the 48th Battalion in the Great War.  He left W.A. in 1915, was gassed in France, and was invalided home in 1917.  From the effects of the gassing he never recovered.  The funeral cortege moved from the residence, and preceeded to the Fremantle Cemetery, where the remains were laid to rest in the Church of England portion, the casket being enshrouded with the Union Jack.  The Rev. F.T. Bowen officiated at the graveside.
