THE RHODES SCHOLAR.

MR H. E. WHITEMAN SELECTED.

Yesterday the selection committee, consisting of the governor, the Lieut.-Governor, the Chief Justice, Archbishop Riley, the Chancellor of the University (Sir Winthrop Hackett), the Director of Education (Mr. Cecil Andrews), and Professor Murdoch (University Professorial Board) met to select  the Rhodes scholar for 1915. Having given close consideration to the claims of the five candidates,   the committee made choice of Harold Ernest Whiteman.

The successful student, after he had gained a secondary school scholarship, was educated at the  Guildford Grammnar School and the Westerst Australian University, and he spent the last year at the  last named institution. His scholastic and athletic record is a fine one. It is set forth in the pages of  the "Swan," the Guildford Grammar School journal, as follows:-"Prefect, 1911-12, 13-14; captain of the school, 1912-1514; XI., 1910-11-12-13-14; vice-captain, 1912-13; captain, 1913-14; Combined  Secondary Schools' XI., 1913-14; XVIII., 1911 12-13-14; inter-schools' sports, 1911-13; cross country  running team, 1910-11: school cross country champion, 1913; Strelitz Cup winner, 1913; rifle team, 1910-11-12-13; captain, 1913; member of general sports committee, 1912-13-14; lieutenant in cadets, 1913-14; president of debating society, 1913-14; joint editor of 'Swan,' 1911-12-13-14; junior honours, 1909: senior honours, 1910-11; higher honours, 1912.13; gained a senior exhibition of £255, 1911, a Government exhibition of £150, 1913; took first place in Western Australia in higher, 1913; left in form VI." At the University Mr. Whiteman passed with distinction in mathematics,  English, Latin, Greek, and French. His age is 19 years 10 months.
