Biography contributed

John Francis Mills was the son of John George Gordon Mills, and Julia Mills of Gordon, Victoria, Australia, born in 1875.

According to contemporary reports, John was employed as a foreman of some railway works at Ngakawau, New Zealand, when he enlisted on 18 December 1914. He had had military experience before enlisting, and was reported to be a fine rifle shot, and was made a member of the Canterbury Mounted Rifles. He went to Egypt as a trooper, and was subsequently drafted into the second battery, New Zealand Field Artillery.

He was killed in action 9 August 1915, aged 40.

His younger brother, 4236 Pte. Patrick Joseph Mills 7th Battalion AIF, died of wounds in France on 29 August 1916, aged 27. 

His youngest brother, 2609 Pte. Gordon Francis Mills 7th Battalion AIF was killed in action in Belgium on 4 October 1917, aged 19. 

Another brother 26964 George Mills, served with the Auckland Infantry Battalion and 2619 William Mills served with the 7th Battalion AIF for over four years.
