Private Stanley Smith (Service Nos:W5574/W68104) enlisted in the ACMF on two occasions. Initially Private Smith served with 55 Anti Aircraft (AA) Coy from 8 January 1941 to 25 November 1941, and was Discharged as Medically Unfit. On 26 April 1942 Private Smith re enlisted, and was attached to No 2 (Fremantle) Battalion VDC at Discharge on 6 October 1943.
Stan was born in Yorkshire, England in 1921, third of five children of Israel Smith (b1890 in Glasgow, Scotland) and Lillian (Lily) Maud Buck (b1897 in Yorkshire, England). Israel (a Clay Moulder) and Lily (a Domestic Servant) married in Yorkshire in 1915, and Israel served with the British Army (Private; Regimental No:27913) in 1915/1916. Israel and Lily were living in Leeds, where Israel was a General Labourer, when they immigrated in 1922. They arrived in Albany, Western Australian with their two sons on board the Themistocles - Israel gave his ocupation as Engine Overhauler - and lived in Busselton, where Israel worked as a Cart Man. In 1928 the family moved to Fremantle, where Israel was a Grocer's Assistant, before settling in Perth, where Israel was a Greengrocer. Israel served with the ACMF in WWII, and by 1949 he and Lily had settled in North Perth, where Israel worked as a Yardman and Lily as a Cook.
Stan was working in Perth as a Labourer in 1940, and in 1942 as a Tram Conductor. In 1945 in Perth he married Gladys (Glad) Jessie Dearden (b1921 in Perth, Western Australia) - Glad was working as a Nurseryman's Assistant. Stan and Glad settled in Perth, where they raised their family - Glad continued working as a Nurseryman's Assistant until the late 1940s, and Stan worked as a Bread Carter, Fibro Caster and Plasterer. In the early 1960s Stan and Glad moved to Applecross, where Stan was a Garage Attendant before becoming a Garage Keeper in the mid 1960s. Stan died in 2006 and Glad in 2012.
