Biography contributed

From Australian Remembrance Army

Private Serguey Andronikovich Kalinin (Service No. 3851), an Australian World War One veteran, is among those whose previously unmarked graves in Lutwyche Cemetery we have now honoured with a plaque recognising their service for Australia. We received grant funding for this grave plaque from the Australian Government under the Marking (First World War) Private Graves Grants Program.

On 23 September 2023, his plaque was unveiled in Lutwyche Cemetery, along with a further 300 plaques on the previously unmarked graves of Australian World War One veterans:

Serguey Andronikovich Kalinin was born in Moscow, Russia, in 1884, to Andronik Efrem Kalinin and Evdokia Medvedeff (sometimes spelt Medvedev). He came to Australia in 1909 after serving in the Russian Army, and worked on farms and in railway construction.

He enlisted in the Australian Imperial Force in Rockhampton in December 1915, at the age of 31, giving his occupation as labourer and his marital status as single. He named Mrs Ann Midvedep (his mother), of Russia, as his next of kin.

On 19 September 1916, he embarked for overseas service with the 31st Battalion aboard Seang Choon from Brisbane. After arriving in England on 9 December 1916, he proceeded to France from the 8th Training Battalion aboard Princess Victoria via Folkestone on 16 January 1917.

After transferring to the 31st Battalion, he was hospitalised with trench feet and rheumatism in March 1917, followed by a further admission for bronchitis the following month. His health never fully recovered, and the recurring effects of bronchitis ultimately forced his return to Australia in December 1917 aboard the troopship HMAT Persic (A34). He was formally discharged from the Australian Imperial Force in March 1918.

Following his return, Serguey lived in South Brisbane, working as a labourer and remaining in the inner-city area for the rest of his life. Around 1939, he became a naturalised Australian, adopting the name Serguey Alexander Kalinin.

Private Serguey Andronikovich Kalinin died on 4 January 1950, aged 66, and was interred the following day in Anzac Portion 8, Lutwyche Cemetery, Brisbane.
His funeral notice named no relatives or friends, and there is no evidence that he ever married or fathered any children:
“KALININ.— The Funeral of the late Serguey Alexander Kalinin, of 18 Hartley St., City, and formerly 31st Batt., 1st A.I.F., will leave the Funeral Parlour, 45 Adelaide St., City, this (Thursday) Afternoon, after service, commencing at 2.15 o’clock, for the Lutwyche Cemetery.”

After decades without recognition and dignity at his place of burial, his grave now bears a plaque commemorating his service to Australia — ensuring his name endures among those remembered for their duty and sacrifice.

Lest We Forget.
