Ernest Edward Dowling Clarke

Ernest Clarke joined the AIF on a temporary basis to deliver a batch of horses to Egypt for the Army. He was promoted to the rank of Honourary Lieutenant in the A.I.F.  for the duration of his voyage only and allotted for duty as a Remount Officer on the vessel.

As Mr Clarke was a well-known horse breeder and "leading studmaster", it was decided his appointment was necessary to assist with the care and management of the A.I.F. Remounts being dispatched on the transport "Clan MacCorquidale". He had previously held a commission in the Royal Navy and was considered specially qualified for the position.

After disembarking in Egypt, Mr Clarke obtained a short stint of leave and then boarded transport H.M.A.T. " Kaiser I Hind" at his own expense for his return to Australia. Upon disembarking in Australia, his appointment was terminated, and Mr Clarke went back to his stud.
