The Sun News-Pictorial (Melb, Vic), Mon 17 Jan 1949 (p.10):
Lovely Flinders – It is said the the coastline around Flinders is reminiscent of the coast of Cornwall. On Saturday I had morning tea with Captain George Smith, who has been connected with Flinders since 1909, at his house overlooking the lovely green sweep of the golf course to rugged cliffs above the blue waters of the ocean. Captain Smith was the moving spirit behind the rebuilding of St John’s Church of England, Flinders. Its latest addition is a war memorial baptistry, with murals executed by the former war artist Charles Bush. The parishioners have created a beautiful place, both inside and out, which is a model of good taste and careful expenditure. Ninety per cent of country churches in Victoria, please note!
