Lance Corporal Jack Patrick Fitzgibbon (1991–2024) was a dedicated soldier who served a decade in the Australian Army, rising to become a highly respected integrator within the Special Operations Command.
Born into a family deeply rooted in the Cessnock community, Jack was the son of Dianne and Joel Fitzgibbon. He grew up as a proud "son of the Hunter," serving as School Captain at St Patrick’s Primary and playing on the wing (jersey No. 5) for his beloved Cessnock Goannas. His connection to his hometown was profound, fostering the "larrikin spirit," humility, and cheeky humor that later made him the life of his Army unit.
Military Service: Jack enlisted in 2014, fulfilling a childhood ambition. While posted to the 126 Signal Squadron, he was not merely support; he was an "integrator" embedded with Oscar Platoon, Alpha Company, of the 2nd Commando Regiment. To fulfill this role, he maintained the same elite physical and tactical standards as the Commandos he fought alongside.
He was described by peers and parliamentary leaders as a "gold standard signaller," mastering the complex communications networks essential for high-risk environments. Jack was also a "custodian" of the ADF’s military freefall capability. At the time of his passing, he was a highly proficient parachutist who had completed 106 jumps, 95 of which were military freefall descents.
His service included:
• Papua New Guinea: An operational deployment focused on capacity building.
• Operation Flood Assist (2022): Providing critical aid to Australian communities during catastrophic flooding.
• Domestic Counter-Terrorism: Service in high-readiness roles, protecting the nation’s domestic security.
The Final Patrol: On 6 March 2024, during a routine parachute training exercise at RAAF Base Richmond, Jack sustained catastrophic injuries. In a testament to the "brotherhood" of his regiment, his fellow soldiers landed immediately to render first aid. He passed away the following day at Westmead Hospital, surrounded by his family.
Jack is remembered not just for his military excellence, but for his authenticity, a man who was rarely seen in photos without a smile or a beer in hand, surrounded by mates. His legacy continues through the Commando Welfare Trust, supporting the families of special operations veterans.
