Lance Sergeant Denis Joseph O'Donoghue (Service Nos:N171129/NX102687) initially enlisted in the ACMF on 9 August 1940, and was called up for Full Time Duty on 29 December 1941. Bombardier O'Donoghue was attached to 52 Field Park Coy and 7th Field Regiment. Promoted to Corporal on 18 April 1942, he was a Lance Sergeant attached to Chemical Warfare Coy on 4 August 1942 when he transferred to the AIF. Lance Sergeant O'Donaghue embarked fromTownsville for Port Moresby on 16 February 1944 on board the Canberra, and emplaned from Lae for Townsville on 11 March 1945. Lance Sergeant O'Donaghue was attached to NG Records Office at Discharge on 26 November 1945.
Denis was born in Sydney, New South Wales in 1916, eldest of five children (and only son) of Michael Joseph O'Donoghue (b1894 in Sydney, New South Wales) and Alice Agnes Antoine (b1893 in Sydney, New South Wales). Michael and Alice married in 1916 in Sydney, where they settled and raised their family and Michael worked for the Railways.
Denis started work in Sydney as a Carter for Gartrell Bros Artamon, and was a Storeman/Buyer in Sydney in 1940 when he enlisted in the Army. In 1942 in Sydney he married Margaret Alice Broderick (b1919 in Sydney, New South Wales) - Margaret was working as a Shop Assistant in Sydney. Following his Discharge from the Army, Denis and Margaret settled in Sydney, where they raised their family and Denis worked as a Clerk and Travelling Salesman until retirement. Denis died in 1999 and Margaret in 2011.
