Alfred's parents were Mads Hansen Poulsen and Ameilia Melrose. Alfred was living at Terrors Creek and working as a labourer when he enlisted. He married Cecilla Alma Maude Sheen in 1916. His unit embarked from Sydney, New South Wales, on board HMAT A10 Karoo on 5 May 1916. He returned to Australia in 1919 and was living at Woolloongabba with his wife Maude.
