He was one of eight children to John and Mary Ann (nee Tatnall) Jack had 6 sisters & 1 elder brother, and qualified as a Brass Finisher in 1908. (Jack’s mother, Mary-Ann “Polly” Tatnall, passed away in 1935 & Jack may have been educated at the Marrickville West Public School). Jack joined the NSW Lancers, Citizen Force (7th Light Horse Regiment) from 1908 to Aug 1913 before the outbreak of WW1, he travelled to the UK (SS Osterley, July 1915) and joined the Royal Field Artillery (RFA), appointed to Headquarters 5th Army Brigade, RFA. While in France (on leave from the front) he played in a 11a-side Aussie rules game to raise funds for the Red-Cross., Jack was an artillery officer and was awarded the 1914-15 Star, British War Medal, and Victory Medal. He retired from the RFA in 1919 and returned to “Amhurst” (#8 Miller St, Nth Sydney) where Jack was working, before moving to “Kedu Glen” (Katy Glen) in Mar 1919. While he built his home “Lahore” in North Bridge NSW and raised 3 children (Patricia, John & Tony).
