Frank was born in Kyabram, Victoria in 1917, eldest of four children (sons) of Philip (Paddy) Smith (b1889 in Melbourne, Victoria) and Elsie May Gorman (b1895 in Wangaratta, Victoria). Paddy was a Labourer in 1915 when he and Elsie married in Shepparton, and Paddy enlisted in the Army (Private; Service Nos:513/4494). Following his Discharge from the Army, Paddy and Elsie settled in Kyabram, where they raised their family and Paddy was a Farmer/Orchardist. In the early 1950s they retired to Bendigo.
Frank started work as a Milk Carter in Kyabram, and was a Carpenter in 1940 when he enlisted in the Army. In September 1940 in Kyabram he married Doris (Dolly) Emily Canfield (b1918 in Korong Vale, Victoria). Following his Discharge from the Army, Frank and Dolly settled in Rochester, where they raised their family and Frank was a Farmer. Frank and Dolly had divorced by 1960, and Frank worked as a Builder in Kyabram. Frank died in 2002.
